Free Garageband Instruments
I like nearly all of Apple’s $99 Jam Pack add-on sound libraries for GarageBand (Voices doesn’t do a lot for me), but I also like free. And when I think free and GarageBand I think SoundFonts, E-mu Systems’ sampled sound file format—a software instrument format supported by GarageBand.
I don't know of any extensions to GarageBand that will install more sounds for GarageBand iOS. What many are using is AUDIOBUS. See this link: Audiobus can connect other applications to GarageBa nd, so you can for example play your drums in a separate drummer application and record your playing to a track in GarageBand. Here’s how to obtain and install SoundFonts:
- You can play various musical instruments, use different professional features and record your soundtracks easily. - Load up on Apple Loops for Garageband. Macloops is a massive resource for free apple loops and samples. We have thousands of AIFF format apple loops ranging from drum loops, bass loops and synth loops to guitar loops, cinematic and lots more.
Free Garageband Instrument Plug-ins
1. Google “soundfont” to find one of the many sites that offer free SoundFonts—HammerSound is a good place to start.
2. Once you’ve downloaded a few SoundFonts, place them in this directory: /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks.
3. In GarageBand create a new Software Instrument track, click the Details triangle, and from the Instrument Generator pop-up menu choose DLSMusicDevice and click the Edit button next to it.
4. In the window that appears, choose your SoundFont from the Sound Bank pop-up menu to play that sound.
Note that not all SoundFonts are compatible with the Mac OS. I’ve also found that GarageBand is happier if the SoundFont extension is spelled .sf2 rather than .SF2.

Also note that SoundFont files are often compressed in the RAR format. You can expand them using a tool such as the donation-ware UnRarX.
GarageBand inclusive of a standard keyboard instrument and a smart keyboard instrument. The keyboard in the GarageBand is set up like the standard keyboard and has a variety of keyboard instruments and some of which are customizable including grand pianos, electric piano, multiple organs, clavinet, synth tracks, and also the bass synth pads, and synths.
It also has several different sounds. The keyboard can play arpeggios and has a blend curve. The smart keyboard is designed like other smart instruments so that the individuals can play chords on the piano, electric piano, organ, clavinet, and four stretchable synthesizers. There are two distinct types of drum instruments in the GarageBand App. The touch drum instrument comprises of seven acoustic drum kits termed as Bluebird, Classic Studio Kit, Live Rock Kit, Retro Rock, Roots, SoCal, and Vintage Kit with the realistic setup, as well as three electronic drum kits like Hip Hop Drums, House Drums and a drum kit with samples from Roland TR-808 and 909.
They have been configured as automated drums with customizable sounds that can be saved as separate drum kits. The other drum device is the Smart Drums instrument, in which the drum sounds can be organized in a grid according to the complexity and also the volume.
